Communication
Beer, basketball and Bob Dole: How one newspaper set the Web on fire
Although still relatively new, the Web can seem 'old hat' to those who use it often. The Topeka Capital Journal decided to lure readers via the Web, with everything from beer-tasting contests to message boards. Find out how they did it, and how you can emulate their success.

Rob Curley, director of New Media, Topeka Capital Journal

MANAGEMENT /ALUMNI
Benchmarking for the Advancement Field
Grizzard’s University Team and Performance Enhancement Group provide a comprehensive overview of how your institution can conduct a market survey that will allow you to determine the interest level and attitudes of your alumni. This study can analyze and provide data for both financial and volunteer support. The ability to determine and measure the loyalty factor will be invaluable in advancement for the alumni, development, and communications fields. This session also will provide an opportunity to learn first hand through an interactive case study.

Presenters: Todd Mennen, Grizzard
Rob Shoss, Performance Enhancement Group
Brian Cohen, Performance Enhancement Group

PHILANTHROPY
Building Donor Relationships: Better Face-to-Face Contacts

Being a successful development officer is more than knowing your institution’s gift priorities and what type of gift proposal to deliver to your prospects. Building solid relationships with your donors is the key to your success. This session will not only summarize the gift vehicles that attract donors, but it will also highlight the real world applications of enhancing your personal contact skills to improve your donor relationships. You will learn how to prepare yourself before you make the first call, how to set up the appointment, and then learn the steps for how to make an effective personal visit.

Presenters:
Larry Stelter - President, The Stelter Group (IA)
Dave Dierks - Assistant Vice President and Director of Principal Gifts, University of Iowa (IA)

Volunteers and 911
The Changing Face of Volunteerism: A Post 9/11 Perspective
Volunteers are the life's blood of many of our alumni organizations. Where would we be without them? Recruiting, retaining, and motivating good volunteers is always challenging, but particularly more so given the aftermath of September 11, 2001. How has 9/11 impacted volunteerism for America? What lessons have we learned as a nation and how can we translate those lessons into practical applications for working with volunteers in our campus-based volunteer organizations?

Linda French will share her firsthand insights on this subject as she relates her experiences while serving as the American Red Cross's top volunteer - its National Chairwoman for Disaster Services -- a job she ironically reported to duty for on the morning of September 11. Previously, Linda has served as an associate professor of business administration at William Jewell College, a senior partner at the Blackwell Sanders Peper Martin law firm, and senior vice president-general counsel/secretary of Payless Cashways, a national building chain.

Presenter:
Linda French, National Board member, American Red Cross, Former National Chair Woman for Disaster Services Keynote Descriptions
