An assistant college professor at Doane in Lincoln, Nebraska, consultant to business in interpersonal and gender communication and a professional comedian who has appeared on both Showtime and HBO, Juli has spent the last 18 years encouraging her students and her audiences to embrace the humor in life and communication. Presenter: Anne Scott, Director of Student Alumni Programs, Oklahoma State University Alumni Association Dealing With Stress 1 Thermal BioFeedback: A Little-known Treasure (PD) Learn a simple biofeedback technique for reducing your body's stress response. For a mere ten bucks and 10 minutes a day, this deep relaxation technique can be yours to use at will in everyday life and in extraordinary circumstances. Temperature self-regulation enables one to manage stress, to maintain a calm, collected and empowered condition, to promote stability and health; affects heart, digestion, respiration, blood pressure, strengthens the immune system, decreases anxiety, and reduces cravings of all kinds. (AL) Alumni are looking to Alumni Associations to provide them guidance and resources in the career arena. But, can every office provide a fully staffed and equipped program to meet the needs of our alumni? Most offices cannot provide the same service for alumni that the on-campus career centers provide for students. Whether you can offer assistance in one or a dozen career related services, it's important that career assistance becomes part of your alumni programming. Find out what you can do to offer an effective career service program that includes career networking, mentoring, job postings, career seminars, career resources, and alumni club outreach without having to provide a full service career center. Presenter: Julie Larson, Director of Student and Career Programs, Iowa State University Meyers Briggs Type Indicator (PD) ($10 fee, payable at session) This mini-version of the full Meyers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) will help identify and enhance your capabilities by knowing how you function. The MBTI provides a useful method of understanding people by looking at eight personality preferences that everyone uses at different times energizing, perceiving, deciding, and living. (PH) Whether you are new to the area of planned giving or have done if for years, you need to know what donors really care about when it comes to getting them to commit to including your charity as part of their estate plans. In this session, Scott Blakesley will share his experiences (as a practicing lawyer) as to what motivates donors to make such a commitment, and what are the "hot buttons" that seem to grab and keep their attention long enough to complete the gift. Presenter: Erik Stenbakken, Stenbakken Photography Dealing With Stress 2 - A Mind-Body Approach to Stress Management (PD) This session focuses experientially on breathing exercises and meditation techniques to promote a quiet body, quiet emotions, and a quiet mind. Breathing strategies will include deep, relaxed diaphragmatic breathing, energy breathing, hemisphere balancing breathing, calming breathing and sleep-inducing breathing. Several brief meditation exercises will be illustrated and coached. Breathing exercises provide an excellent focus of attention in meditation, bringing one to self-awareness. Breathing and meditation exercises can increase energy, stimulate alertness, calm the body when anxious or agitated, and bring about a sense of well-being.
